Preliminary renderings for the new Coral Springs Charter School show a modern, colorful campus design featuring specialized learning areas for students.
Harvard Jolly PBK’s initial design plans for the city-owned property at 2501 Coral Springs Drive – vacant land situated next to the city’s police department – include a science lab, athletic complex, vocational and technical education labs, a gymnasium, student lounge, and multiple classrooms, including one focused on dropout prevention.
The renderings also show a new parking area that could be built next to the Coral Springs Gymnasium. Existing parking lots in the area would be used by staff and students, the renderings show.
Coral Springs Charter School is a tuition-free charter school that serves grades six through 12 at 3205 N. University Dr. It was established in 1999 through a joint effort by Charter Schools USA and the city of Coral Springs.
According to U.S. News and World Report rankings, Coral Springs Charter School’s student population is 1,719.
The larger, two-story campus would offer students modernized classrooms and athletics areas, accommodate a boost in enrollment, and provide easy access to the nearby Coral Springs Center for the Arts and fields at Mullins Park. Police and firefighters would also be able to reach the school quickly from their respective facilities.
The renderings estimate the campus would take around 21 months to build once permitting is completed. The project would take around three years overall to complete, the records show.
City spokesperson Lindsey Steinberg stressed that the renderings are a starting point and that no plans have been finalized.
“It is important to note that these are preliminary renderings to receive feedback from community stakeholders,” Steinberg said in an email. “These plans are not final. Any conceptual design plans would involve the community, sports leagues, and our commission before finalization.”
Moving the charter school was deemed a high-priority capital improvement project that SEPI Engineering and Construction consultant Kaitlyn Forbes presented to the city commission and Community Redevelopment Agency in November 2022. Plans for the move had repeatedly been discussed in the years prior.
The commission in 2023 approved a CRA Master Plan focused on a 136-acre area centered around Sample Road and University Drive, including the Cornerstone development and the rest of the downtown area currently being constructed.
The relocating of the charter school is part of the city’s broader plan for the area, records show.
