Teen Arrested After Car Chase and Police-Involved Shooting in Coral Springs

After gunshots were exchanged early this morning, a suspect tried to elude police in a car chase, resulting in him being shot after pointing a gun at a Coral Springs Police officer.

According to Coral Springs Police, it began at 12:32 a.m. when dispatch was advised that an occupant of a white BMW was involved in a shooting after witnesses heard 20-30 gunshots from the 3800 block of University Drive.

Officer Waye responded to the area in her marked patrol vehicle and observed the BMW traveling westbound on NW 38th Drive at the 9200 block. While the lights and siren were activated on her vehicle, she saw the suspect, later identified as Alan Christopher Cadelus, 17, of Deerfield Beach, make a left turn heading south on University drive.

Waye pursued the vehicle to the intersection of Sample Road and University drive where he drove through red light and made a left turn heading eastbound on Sample Road. As she continued to pursue him, he began traveling eastbound in the westbound lane of Sample Road. He then lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the curb on the 8300 block on the north side of Sample Road.

Other officers arrived on the scene, and while Cadelus exited the drivers side of the BMW, he was armed with a handgun. Officers Waye and Greene yelled “Get on the ground.” However, he failed to comply and turned his body toward Officer Greene while pointing the muzzle of the handgun towards him. Green felt he was going to shoot him, and discharged his weapon several times and struck Cadelus in his left and right legs.

Officer Perez provided emergency medical aid on the scene and then Cadelus was transported to Broward Health North where he was treated for his wounds.

Cadelus, who was driving with a suspended license, told police he was active participant in a shooting at the 8900 block of NW 38th Drive prior to the vehicle pursuit. He admitted to shooting from within his vehicle at an unknown person driving a silver Dodge Challenger. Numerous shell casings were recovered at the location and submitted as evidence.

He told police after he hit the curb, he was preparing to run from police and admitted to turning his body towards an officer while holding the gun in his left hand. He said he threw the gun in the nearby bushes where it was later recovered. There was also a passenger in the front seat named Kurtis Santiago who corroborated with his story.

Cadelus was placed under arrest for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon upon a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing and eluding, discharging a firearm in a public or residential property, driving with a suspended license and running a red light.
