Lovingly referred by his brothers and sisters in service as “Beef”, firefighter/EMT Michael Matonak tragically and suddenly lost his life on Wednesday according to the Coral Springs Parkland Fire Department.
Matonak began his public safety career as a teenager after joining the City of Coral Springs Police Explorer program. A graduate of Coral Springs J.P. Taravella High School, he continued his education in the City at the Coral Springs Fire Academy.
After completing the academy, he began service with the Coral Springs Volunteer Fire Department in 1996. In 2000, Matonak was hired by the city as a full-time firefighter/EMT. He was promoted to the position of driver engineer in 2004.
The cause of death has not been disclosed at this time. Matonak is survived by his wife, Kelly, and their two children, Brayden and Bryson; as well as his parents Wayne and Joanne; brother, Glenn; sister, Julie Lobl along with his nieces and nephews.
Catholic Mass and service will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m., at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Coral Springs. A burial will be held after the service at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Cemetery in North Lauderdale.
