Coral Springs Police has just announced their 2019 Officer of the Year -- and officer, organizer, and volunteer Chris Swinson is this year’s winner.
In an online statement, Coral Springs Police shared that as one of the senior officers within the Traffic Unit, Swinson is a well-trained, highly-respected Traffic Homicide Investigator and is one of three certified motorcycle instructors for the unit.
After attending hundreds of hours of additional training in these positions, he has taken on countless other responsibilities throughout the department and on his own time including one of the department's Public Information Officers, Florida Department of Transportation grant coordinator, and Special Events Coordinator.
He spends countless hours attending meetings, developing site plans and safety plans, scheduling details officers, and meeting with vendors to ensure the success of each event.
This includes all the city's major events such as Our Town, Art Festival, the Half Marathon, Unplugged concert events, Bits 'n Sips, WorldFest, Savor the Notes, Fourth of July fireworks, Holiday Parade, and Downtown in December just to name a few.
In addition to all of his department responsibilities, Officer Swinson volunteers a significant amount of his personal time as the president of the executive board for the Southeast Police Motorcycle Rodeo committee. He was elected to the position by his peers due to the overwhelming respect he has throughout the law enforcement community.
Each year, he organizes the Southeast Police Motorcycle Rodeo competition. This weeklong event is attended by hundreds of riders from all over the country, competing in various skills competitions. As president, Officer Swinson has been instrumental in fundraising that has led to the donation of computers and A/V equipment to the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County.
The committee has also donated to the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) KIDS camp and has also made numerous donations to the families of fallen officers throughout the country.
Officer Swinson sacrifices his free time and time with his family to coordinate these events because of his passion for representing the Coral Springs Police Department and help those in need.
