Forest Glen Middle School has launched a new program that gives high-achieving eighth-graders the opportunity to get an early start on high school coursework.
The Ascend Program allows participating Forest Glen students to attend a class at Coral Springs High School before beginning their regular school day at the middle school.
This school year, students are taking Communication Technology 1 Honors, a TV production course, during first period at Coral Springs High School.
The course focuses on visual and digital design, along with training in software used for digital imaging, publishing, web design and multimedia projects.
Students will also have the opportunity to earn industry certifications, including Adobe Certified Professional credentials in visual design, video design or web design, as well as Microsoft Office Specialist certifications. The credentials can eventually be included on resumes and may help prepare students for future educational and career opportunities.
School officials said the Ascend Program is designed to expand learning opportunities beyond those traditionally available in middle school while exposing students to a wider range of academic and career interests.
The program also gives eighth graders experience on a high school campus, helping them build confidence before making the transition to high school.
Other schools that have this program are Tequesta Trace Middle with Cypress Bay High School in Weston.
