The New American Hero Award, unique to Charter Schools USA as a way of naming their teacher of the year, has chosen a Coral Springs resident to represent South Florida in 2021.
Alaina Butler, who teaches high school theater ensemble at the Coral Springs Charter School (CSCS), has been chosen to represent Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The Orlando native moved to Coral Springs to teach, following an acting career at Universal Studios and dinner theater.
She lives in the Crossings community with her husband, David, and daughter, Ashlyn, a kindergartner at the Renaissance Charter School in Coral Springs.
“I’ve been a teacher for 15 years and would say I take a very hands-on approach. I want my students to take full ownership of the classroom. Everything we do has a real-world connection,” she said.
Butler is a finalist in her category and won’t know if she won the New American Hero Award until judges visit her classroom and see her teaching style in action.
The class is currently heavily into Shakespeare, where they’re rapping out sonnets, writing their own TikTok-inspired musicals, and building replicas of The Globe theatre in London.
Butler said her students performed a virtual murder mystery last year and looked forward to doing it again.
Stay tuned because The New American Hero Award winners will be announced in April.
“I don’t know who nominated me for this prestigious award, but I’m so honored they did,” she said.
