Coral Springs is moving forward in its efforts to relocate and rebuild basketball courts at Cypress Park.
City commissioners voted Wednesday unanimously to authorize Sagaris Corporation of Coral Springs to construct two full basketball courts across the street from the main park.
The new courts will be located at Cypress Hammock Park, which is adjacent to Cypress Water Park.
The cost of the contract is $243,240, with funding from the approved capital budget. The basketball courts, fencing, and electrical system, among other factors, make up the final cost. Of that sum, $10,000 is miscellaneous funds that will be used only in unforeseen circumstances.
While there is room for a third court, the city authorized funding only for the two new courts.
In June 2020, the city announced that they would replace the basketball courts with pickleball courts. The city installed those courts in September 2020.
The move came after years of complaints about profanity. The move came with disapproval, with some saying there were racial undertones.
“Pickleball is a fast-growing sport that many of our residents have come to enjoy, including me,” Mayor Scott Brook said. “However, when new pickleball courts were installed that replaced the basketball courts at Cypress Park, several residents expressed their frustration. We, as a commission, listened.”
In January, the city commission approved constructing basketball courts at a new location. Construction will begin in late summer, weather permitting, according to the city.
“As a city, we want to ensure our parks and facilities are enjoyable for all recreational activities,” Mayor Brook said. “I am very proud that city staff developed a great solution, constructing new full courts for basketball enthusiasts.”
