A Coral Springs man was arrested after he choked, pushed into a pool, and beat his girlfriend with a long metal tool because he did not like the way she used her cell phone and Instagram account, according to police.
According to court records, Woodson Meristil, 21, of NW 43rd Court, is charged with domestic violence battery by strangulation, criminal mischief, and battery. He was released on an unspecified bond following his Sept. 3 arrest.
Meristil’s alleged crimes came to light after his victim fled his home after a beating, hid in the yard of a nearby house, and phoned her mother, who called police, according to an arrest affidavit.
According to Coral Springs Police, the victim and Meristil dated on and off for about eight months. During breakups, he would inquire about her phone and Instagram use, the affidavit states. On Sept. 2, they argued about the issue again. As the victim tried to keep her phone from Woodson, he punched her in her stomach and used his arm to restrict her breathing.
She stayed over at his home that night, and their argument continued the next day, police said.
The couple wrestled over her phone, and Woodson allegedly choked her from behind, records show. On his patio, Woodson took out the unidentified metal tool and beat her with it before shoving her in a pool and dragging her around by her hair, according to court records.
Soon after, she snuck out of Woodson’s home and called her mother, police said.
Meristil was arrested and declined to discuss the incident with officers.
