The armed man who barricaded himself inside his mother’s Coral Springs home Friday told her he would kill her before pointing his 9-millimeter pistol at Coral Springs Police Deputy Chief Shawn Backer, as well as a detective and police officer, court records show.
According to an arrest affidavit, Backer, who heads the department’s Operations Division, had responded with other officers to the scene in the 5700 block of Northwest 46th Drive, along with Coral Springs Police Detective Robert Coupe.
That’s when Brandon Hayes, 25, walked out of his mother’s house and pointed his gun “directly at all three officers while ordering them to leave the area,” leading police to believe violence was imminent the affidavit states.
The incident sparked an hours-long standoff with SWAT team members and police crisis negotiators, authorities said. Hayes was arrested upon surrendering to police.

In addition to the aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge, court records show Hayes faces three counts of aggravated assault on an officer, as well as charges of weapon possession by a violent career criminal and violation of probation.
Hayes, a convicted felon, was on probation for a 2020 conviction on charges stemming from his violently refusing to leave a Coral Springs Tijuana Taxi, records show.
He was being held without bond Wednesday at the Broward Main Jail.
