As the United States intensifies military strikes against Iran and pressure grows on the country’s ruling regime, the family of longtime Coral Springs resident Robert Levinson is demanding that Iranian authorities finally answer for his disappearance and return his remains.
Levinson, a private investigator and former FBI agent, disappeared in March 2007 while visiting Iran’s Kish Island. U.S. officials later concluded he had been detained by Iranian authorities and held for years. In 2020, the U.S. government announced it believed Levinson had died in Iranian custody, though the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown, and his remains have never been returned to his family.
Nearly two decades after his disappearance, Levinson’s relatives say the Iranian regime still has not provided a full accounting of what happened.
“For nearly 19 years, Iran has lied, obstructed, and refused to answer for the kidnapping, detention, and death of our father, Robert Levinson,” the Levinson family, who live in Coral Springs, said in a statement. “He was taken by Iranian officials in 2007, held for years without basic human rights, denied contact with his family, and never returned home.”
The family released the statement as the U.S. and Israeli joint military action against Iran escalated in recent days, with American strikes targeting the regime and its leadership as part of a broader effort to weaken the government in Tehran and destroy its ballistic missile arsenal and nuclear capabilities.
“Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led the regime responsible for these crimes,” the Levinson family said. “His death does not erase what Iran did to our father, and it does not end our fight for accountability. But it is a significant moment for our family and for every family that has suffered at the hands of this regime’s hostage-taking and wrongful detention.”
The family also thanked U.S. leaders for confronting Iran over what they described as a longstanding practice of detaining foreign nationals.
“We are grateful to President Donald Trump and Secretary Rubio for using the power of the United States to confront Iran and to hold it accountable, including by recognizing and addressing Iran’s long-standing practice of wrongful detention,” the statement said.
Levinson’s relatives emphasized that their dispute is with the regime, not the Iranian public.
“Our hearts are with the Iranian people as they continue their struggle for freedom, dignity, and a future free from the repression of this regime.”
Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz, whose district includes Coral Springs, also referenced the Levinson family in an X post Thursday. He mentioned them in the post explaining his “yes” vote on a House war powers resolution aimed at ending the U.S. military action in Iran. The resolution failed.
“I am also thinking of my constituents, the Levinson family, who I have represented since I served in the Florida State Legislature,” Moskowitz wrote. “Robert Levinson vanished in Iran in 2007 and for nearly 19 years, Iran has lied, obstructed, and refused to answer for his kidnapping, detention, and death. Robert’s loved ones deserve the truth of what happened to him in Iranian custody and to have his remains returned home.”
Levinson’s family says that despite the dramatic changes unfolding in Iran, their goal remains unchanged.

“Now Iran must do what it has refused to do for nearly two decades: provide full accountability for what happened to our father, return his remains to our family, and disclose the truth about his kidnapping, imprisonment, and death,” the family said. “Our family will not stop demanding the truth. And we will not stop demanding justice.”
