Each spring, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida hosts a council-wide community food drive called Feeding Florida Together.
Girls from five counties collect non-perishable food in their local communities and deliver it to partner organizations whose mission is to battle hunger and food insecurity in South Florida.
Troops spread the word about the project to friends and family, using funds to shop for needed items. In April 2022, 10,787 pounds of food was gathered and distributed to 39 different organizations by 97 Girl Scout troops across South Florida.
In Coral Springs alone, 87 Girl Scouts in seven troops gathered over 520 pounds of food.
Each troop took up the task of figuring out where they wanted to donate their food; they could pick from a list of organizations provided by GSSEF or choose their own location.Â
Junior Girl Scout Troop 12006 donated 100 pounds of food for the Poor.
This project started in 2004 when a Girl Scout from Weston organized a food drive that filled pantries all over Broward County as part of her Silver Award project.Â
Her project Feeding Broward Together was so large and profoundly impacted the community that Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida decided to adopt the project and hold it annually for all members.Â
Since 2009, this council-wide effort has been responsible for donating more than 5 million pounds of food to local food pantries.
Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida serves more than 6,000 girls in Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties. To explore opportunities to volunteer or partner with Girl Scouts, call 561-427-0177 or visit www.gssef.org.
