After a record-setting season for the J.P. Taravella varsity baseball team, Head Coach Joe Giummule was awarded Regional Coach of the Year by American Baseball Coaches Association.
In year four for Coach Giummule at JPT, he led the Trojans to a record of 21-6-1, knocked off the top team in the nation in Marjory Stoneman Douglas, and won the High School Baseball Network First Pitch Elite Tournament Championship in April.
The Trojans eventually fell to Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the Regional Semifinals after making it back for a second consecutive season.
“I’m grateful and honored for this national recognition, said Coach Giummule. “I can’t thank my players and coaches enough for making me look good. You don’t get recognition like this without having talent and great coaching staff.”
Coach Giummule has also helped nine of his seniors commit to play college baseball, highlighted by University of Miami commit Chris Scinta and University of Houston signee Tyler Gray. Both those pitchers helped lead JPT to a team ERA of 1.75, while Derek Rodriguez led the County in ERA and saves.
Offensively, the Trojans had nine players hit over .300 and had 14 home runs. They also went 75-83 stealing bases. JPT lost only one game at home all season and defeated the top team in Broward, Miami, and Fort Myers. They beat three teams that won State Championships in Doral, MSD and Farragut High School (Tennessee) as well as four teams that made it to States.
While the Trojans had 17 players graduate from this year’s team, Coach Giummule will have to turn to some younger players in hopes of breaking through and making it to States.
