Coral Springs honored the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks Wednesday with a memorial ceremony commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the tragedy.
Coral Springs Police Chief Brad McKeone and Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Chief John Whalen laid a wreath at the city’s 9/11 Memorial plaque and monument in remembrance of the 2,977 people killed in the airliner attacks, including first-responders.
A moment of radio silence was observed across Coral Springs dispatch channels at 8:46 a.m., the exact moment the first tower of the World Trade Center in lower Manhattan was struck by an American Airlines plane on Sept. 11, 2001.
Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook also oversaw a moment of silence among attendees at the memorial event, held at the Northwest Regional Library at 3151 University Drive.
Brook paid tribute to “those of you that lost loved ones on that day or subsequent to that day, and those who feared for family and for friends during those harrowing moments.”
Al-Qaida terrorists used hijacked airplanes to destroy the Twin Towers of New York’s World Trade Center on 9/11 and fly a plane into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
Heroic passengers aboard a third plane, United Airlines Flight 93, thwarted another planned attack on Washington before the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board.
Wednesday’s ceremony in Coral Springs included a presentation of colors and the playing of “Taps.”
Residents were also invited to pay their respects at the city’s 9/11 monument, which contains a donated piece of steel girder from the World Trade Center.
