Coral Glades High School golfers are carrying some fancy new swag thanks to a local dad and his love for the team.
The seven members of the co-ed golf squad were gifted personalized golf bags Monday from SEI Miami, a business and technology consulting firm owned by longtime Coral Springs resident David Ortiz.
Ortiz’s son, Sebastian, is a Coral Glades junior playing his first year of golf at the school. He told his dad the team had been trying to buy team bags to carry their clubs for several years, but funding was an issue.
So, David Ortiz and his company purchased the stylish equipment, which features each player’s name, the school’s name, the Jaguar logo, and Ortiz’s company. The seven bags are worth a total of around $2,000.
Ortiz surprised the team’s players with their new gear Monday at a team meeting called by Coral Glades golf coach Tim DeLeeuw at the Country Club of Coral Springs, where the team practices.
“I was floored by his generosity,” DeLeeuw said of David Ortiz.
The businessman, who played baseball and football at Nova High School in Davie, said the donation was “an easy opportunity to make sure that the golf team was put on the same pedestal as everyone else” playing other sports.
“It’s about making sure all of these boys and girls have the best of the best, that they’re showing up with the equipment they need,” said Ortiz, 45. “I couldn’t have been happier to do this for the kids.”
Other golf teams had been arriving at tournaments with slick-looking team bags, while Coral Glades team members carried whatever bags they could secure on their own.
DeLeeuw said that with their new gear, the team’s players are golfing with more confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.
“The kids went crazy when they saw the bags,” said the first-year coach, who is also an English Language Arts teacher at Coral Glades. “They look great with the equipment and are feeling 100 percent united.”
The team performed well Wednesday during their first tournament with their new swag, DeLeeuw said.
“Getting the bags really psyched them up. They’re ready to roll.”
In 2023, the Jaguars golf team won its first district championship in school history under Jarrod Transue, their former head coach.
