Coral Springs Middle School Speech and Debate Team Shines at County Championship

The Coral Springs Middle School Speech and Debate Team delivered an outstanding performance at the Broward County Middle School Championship Tournament on Saturday, where 22 students from the school competed against more than 300 competitors from 19 middle schools across the county.
Students competed in a range of categories, including speech events that required memorizing and delivering 7- to 10-minute speeches or interpretive scripts, debate events tackling current issues such as nuclear energy, immigration, artificial intelligence, healthcare, and international relations, as well as impromptu and extemporaneous speaking events, where participants had between five and 30 minutes to research, prepare, and deliver speeches on the spot.
Nine Coral Springs Middle School students placed among the top five in their events, earning trophies for their achievements:
- Rahee Patel — 1st Place, Extemporaneous Speaking
- Dmitry Grinberg — 3rd Place, Extemporaneous Speaking
- Jhanvi Subramanian — 1st Place, Original Oratory
- Issah Sheik and Atharva Anand — 2nd Place, Public Forum Debate
- Isla El Chantiry — 2nd Place, Poetry Interpretation
- Daya Nair and Jiya Paniker — 2nd Place, Duo Interpretation
- Matthew Santos — 5th Place, Congressional Debate

Speech and Debate Coach Meredith Geraci praised her team for their dedication and commitment.
“I am extremely proud of all my students who gave up their entire Saturday—from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.—to participate in this tournament,” said Geraci. “It takes a lot of preparation and courage to compete at a Speech and Debate competition.
She added that it was refreshing to see how motivated the students are to compete at these tournaments and to see the level of maturity, professionalism, and talent that these middle school students display.
