Jonathan Douma wants to be a Coral Springs police officer.
Douma is the captain of the Coral Springs Police Explorers Post 276, and is learning about law enforcement and the basics of working for a police force.
On October 11, the Coral Springs Police Explorers post hosted an all-day Delegates training event at Coral Glades High School. Police Explorers units from all over Florida came to learn about the various situations police officers face in their day-to-day work and the best ways to handle them.
Experienced Coral Springs police officers presented the explorers with scenarios, such as how to deal with a trespasser, both professionally and lawfully. They also attended sessions on how to deal with the realities of open carry.
Douma wants a career in law enforcement and believes that being a part of the explorers will give him an advantage when applying to departments.
“I have worked various events and gotten to know Coral Springs police officers. They know my work, and I believe this will give me an advantage,” he said.
Michelle Martin, a Coral Springs officer, participated in the Delegates event. “I love being a police officer, and I believe it is a good career. It is important to be humble and to care about others to be a successful officer,” she said.
To be a member of the Coral Springs Police Explorers, one must be between the ages of 14 and 21, have a grade point average of 2.5, and be interested in a career in law enforcement. They must have a positive attitude, good moral character, enjoy volunteering, and be community-minded, according to Explorers information.
