The Broward Education Foundation is once again asking the community to help students and teachers prepare for the new school year.
The nonprofit launched its annual Back to School Supply Drive on Tuesday, with donations accepted through Aug. 31. The campaign aims to provide essential classroom supplies to Broward County Public Schools students while reducing the financial burden on teachers who often purchase materials with their own money.
Last year, the drive benefited more than 130,000 students at 195 schools and distributed school supplies to more than 12,000 teachers across the district.
According to the National Education Association, more than 90% of teachers spend an average of $800 of their own money each year on classroom supplies.
“Every child deserves a fair chance at a quality education,” said James A. Knapp, president and CEO of Broward Education Foundation. “By providing students with the tools they need, we’re helping build their confidence and setting them up for success in the classroom while giving teachers the resources they need to create engaging learning environments.”
The foundation is encouraging businesses, organizations and residents to participate in several ways, including hosting workplace supply drives, adopting a school by providing backpacks filled with supplies, purchasing items through the organization’s Amazon wishlist, making an online monetary donation, or using a free school supply drive toolkit to organize community collections.
Monetary donations can also make a significant impact. According to the foundation, a $25 donation provides a fully stocked backpack for a student, $100 equips a teacher with classroom resources, and $250 supplies an entire classroom with art materials.
The organization is seeking donations of backpacks, composition books, crayons, glue sticks, folders, notebooks, loose-leaf paper, pencils, pens, markers, rulers, child-safe scissors, hand sanitizer and other classroom essentials.
Donations can be dropped off at the Broward Education Foundation School Supply Center, located at 2300 W. Copans Road, Bay 5, in Pompano Beach.
Those interested in hosting a supply drive or arranging a donation pickup can contact Hector Javier at 754-321-9020 or hector.javier@browardschools.com.
