Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School’s Eagle Regiment Marching Band is enjoying a symphony of success.
The Coral Springs city commission recognized them at their Wednesday meeting for earning the Class 4A state championship at the Florida Marching Band Championship in Orlando last November.
The band earned a score of 92.20 out of 100, narrowly beating University High School of Orlando, who scored 92.10, according to a city document.
The Eagle Regiment also received recognition for having the best music, color guard, and general effect.
“They’re incredible kids, they work extremely hard,” said Robert Rivero, associate director of bands. “I always say that there is no substitute for hard work, and these students are a true testament of that.”
Before the state competition, the Eagle Regiment Band earned three Grand Champion Awards at the Florida Marching Bands Regional Championships. These awards include the Jupiter Festival of Bands on Nov. 6, the Lancer Jamboree on Oct. 9, and the Falcon Sound Invitational on Oct. 2.
Rivero said that despite all of their successes, there were moments that the band did not emerge victorious.
In October, the Eagles Regiment performed at a Bands of America competition in October 2021. Rivero said that multiple schools that they went up against in states beat them in that competition.
After that competition, the students worked even harder and remained focused. Rivero said that since they came out on top, their hard work paid off.
After their success at the regional and state levels, the Eagle Regiment Band plans to take their talent to the global state. They were invited to perform at the London New Year’s Parade in 2023.
“I’m really proud of these kids and I’m very proud to be part of this organization,” Rivero said. “We’re truly thankful to be a part of such a great community.”
