On March 5, 2025, Coral Springs resident Kasia Orzechowska, a dedicated stage 4 colon cancer survivor, secured an official proclamation from Mayor Scott Brook and all city commissioners declaring March as Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
Orzechowska, who was first diagnosed at age 40 after her symptoms were misdiagnosed, has since become an advocate for awareness, early detection, and screening. Her journey began when she was initially told she had gallbladder stones, but a subsequent ER visit led to a life-changing diagnosis of stage 4 colon cancer. Following multiple surgeries and rounds of chemotherapy, she has remained in remission.
“I felt incredibly alone when I was first diagnosed,” Orzechowska said. “It wasn’t until I found Fight Colorectal Cancer that I finally found a community that welcomed me with open arms.”
Now, she is committed to ensuring others facing colorectal cancer know they are not alone. She also advocates for increased research funding and better recognition of symptoms, particularly among young adults and women.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., and cases among younger individuals are rising sharply. By 2030, diagnoses in those under 50 are projected to increase by over 140%. In response, advocates nationwide, including Orzechowska, will gather in Washington, D.C., from March 10-12 for Fight CRC’s annual Call-on Congress to push for legislative action.
