A planned carnival in Coral Springs was canceled after the organizer failed to meet the city’s permitting requirements, officials said Friday.
The Your Town Carnival was announced by the organizer and planned for March 7 through March 10 at the Coral Springs Tennis Center. The carnival, to be presented by the Beach Daze Charitable Foundation, was called off by the foundation in late February.
City officials said the canceled Your Town Carnival had no connection to the Our Town USA Carnival, which ended in 2023 after four decades of annual festivals in Coral Springs.
According to the city, the Your Town Carnival organizer failed to submit her permit application on time, did not submit the application through the required online portal, did not properly complete the application, and included false information in the site plan and building permit application, among other issues.
“The special event permitting process is in place to protect the health, safety, and welfare of our community,” a city spokesperson told Coral Springs Talk in a prepared statement. “The organizer was unable to meet the specific requirements of the permit in a timely manner, and therefore, the permit was appropriately denied. This was not the Our Town USA Carnival held in Coral Springs for decades and appropriately followed the permitting process.”
The organizer of the Your Town Carnival announced the cancelation of the event after city permitting was denied, officials said.
A representative for Beach Daze Entertainment, responding to a request for comment from Coral Springs Talk, pushed back against the city’s account of the process.
“The City sat on the application for almost 3 months before doing anything with it, then in a rush, they requested adjustments and additional documentation leaving very little time to comply,” the representative wrote. “The City never intended on approving this event.”
The representative said the event organizer previously held two successful carnivals in Coral Springs.
According to the city, there were numerous problems with the organizer’s application information for the recently canceled carnival. City officials said the organizer submitted plans stating that the city would be providing 11 portable light generators for the carnival, which was false.
The Fire Marshal also denied the event’s site plan for failing to meet the fire code. After a site plan resubmittal and review on February 26, the same deficiencies were found, according to the city.
Additionally, the organizer also submitted a paper building permit application for electrical work that inaccurately listed Beach Daze Charitable Foundation as the owner of 2575 Sportsplex Drive, city officials said. The property is actually owned by the city.
The representative for Beach Daze Entertainment wrote that the carnival organizer “is well aware of the process” for permitting in the city.
“She just couldn’t get the City to act on the application timely.”
According to city officials, city staff earnestly helped the organizer despite the application issues.
