A Coral Springs man with over 40 firearms and extensive military training has been arrested after authorities say he pressed an unloaded gun on a woman’s stomach and twice pulled the trigger.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Steven John Tomasek, 55, was taken into custody on January 10 after officers linked him to a violent confrontation involving a firearm at a Coral Springs residence.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the incident occurred on November 27 inside an upstairs bedroom of a Hidden Hammocks home located near the 6200 block of Northwest 52nd Street. The argument reportedly began over a piece of furniture left outside the residence, and quickly escalated.
Investigators say Tomasek became extremely angry, took out a handgun, pressed it into the victim’s abdominal area, and pulled the trigger twice. The firearm reportedly clicked both times but did not fire.
The victim told police she feared for her life and believed she was going to die, stating she did not know whether the gun was loaded at the time.
A witness who entered the bedroom during the confrontation corroborated the victim’s account, telling officers he observed Tomasek holding the handgun against her abdomen and heard him say, “You’re dead,” after pulling the trigger.
The affidavit notes concerns raised about a cocktail of circumstances surrounding Tomasek, including his alleged alcohol use, mental health decline, ownership of a reported approximately 40 firearms, and extensive military training.
Following the November incident, a not-in-custody probable cause affidavit was submitted to the State Attorney’s Office. Tomasek was later located and detained when he returned home from work, and was transported to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office Main Jail.
