Broward Health Coral Springs has become the first hospital in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties to complete 500 Aquablation therapy procedures for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, commonly known as an enlarged prostate, the hospital announced.
The milestone highlights the hospital’s investment in advanced, patient-centered treatment options and coincides with Men’s Health Month in June, when healthcare organizations encourage men to seek care for common yet often overlooked conditions.
Aquablation therapy is a robotic-assisted, minimally invasive procedure that uses a heat-free waterjet to remove excess prostate tissue responsible for urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The technology combines real-time ultrasound imaging with robotic precision, allowing surgeons to create a personalized treatment plan based on each patient’s anatomy while preserving surrounding structures important for urinary and sexual function.
“Reaching 500 Aquablation procedures is significant for Broward Health Coral Springs and reflects our commitment to bringing advanced treatments to our local community,” said Dr. Azeem Sachedina, past chief of staff for Broward Health Coral Springs. “As the first hospital in the tri-county area to achieve this milestone, we are proud to offer patients access to cutting-edge technology and exceptional care that improves their quality of life.”
BPH affects millions of men as they age and can cause frequent urination, interrupted sleep, difficulty emptying the bladder, and other symptoms that interfere with daily activities. While medication may relieve symptoms for some patients, others require surgery to treat the underlying condition.
Unlike many traditional surgical approaches, Aquablation therapy is incision-free and uses robotically guided water technology to precisely remove obstructive tissue. The procedure is performed under anesthesia, typically takes about one hour, and generally offers a shorter recovery period with a reduced risk of complications.
“This milestone highlights the trust patients place in our physicians and our multidisciplinary surgical team,” said Kristen Bowman, CEO of Broward Health Coral Springs. “We continue to invest in advanced technologies that improve outcomes, allowing our patients to get back to the activities they enjoy.”
Broward Health was among the first health systems in South Florida to offer Aquablation therapy. Hospital leaders said completing 500 procedures further establishes Broward Health Coral Springs as a regional destination for advanced urologic care.
The 250-bed hospital has also earned an “A” Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national organization that evaluates patient safety and quality measures.
