According to company founder and CEO Nicole Cumberbatch, the summer camp at The Motherhood Village promises to be unlike most other day camps. The first clue lies in its name: STEM Summer Camp.
The camp, which runs from June 9 to Aug. 1, offers “fun and creativity” for children aged 6 to 12.
The Motherhood Village is located at 2902 N. University Drive, the former site of WowMoms World, in the Walk, is a 4,952 sq ft wellness resource and fun center for families with children from newborn to age 13.
“It will be held in the facility’s STEM center,” Cumberbatch said, “and run by an educator, Lisa Brent, a teacher with 18 years of experience.”
Brent is certified as “gifted endorsed,” a designation given only to teachers who have completed additional coursework and training to specialize in working with students identified as gifted and talented.
The camp’s weekly agenda will feature many fun and creative activities, including STEM Detectives, Harry Potter Chemists, Crazy Contraptions, Space Explorers, Inventors Lab, Earth Wonders, Future Engineers, Makerspace, and STEM Celebration. “There will be different themes,” said Cumberbatch.
“It’s not just about STEM,” she said. “There’s an art center. Plus, we have a gym with basketball. There will be ‘brain breaks.’ “
Cumberbatch is looking forward to their first day of camp. “I’m very excited,” she said. “There are no real ‘STEM-focused’ camps.”
A brief tour of the STEM lab proves it will be a feast for many youngsters’ imaginations with its telescope, robotic and scientific games and toys, and a model of our solar system.
Cumberbatch, who lives in the Kenilworth community, opened The Motherhood Village in early April. The Motherhood Village is also the name of Cumberbatch’s popular podcast, which she started in 2019. “It started as a creative outlet,” she said.
The Motherhood Village offers a wide array of services for mothers and children alike, including mommy-and-me classes, aftercare, a playhouse, various children’s events, parenting classes, and support groups for working parents.
Camp hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost starts at $225 and includes snacks. There is a $50 registration fee. Daily rates are available. Campers must bring their own lunches.
Before- and aftercare is also available. Because classroom size is limited, early registration is encouraged. For additional information, call 954-324-3203.
