Newly released dash cam video shows the moments before a Coral Springs police officer struck and killed a 60-year-old e-bike rider on Riverside Drive.
Guy Scott, 60, died after he was struck by a marked Coral Springs Police Department SUV driven by Officer George Isabel shortly after 9:40 p.m. on April 17 near the 4300 block of Riverside Drive.
Because the crash involved an on-duty Coral Springs officer, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated. Florida Highway Patrol investigators later found probable cause to charge Isabel with felony vehicular homicide, but the Broward State Attorney’s Office ultimately filed a misdemeanor reckless driving charge.
Dash camera video obtained by NBC6 shows the moment of impact, with Scott’s body blurred in the footage. Body camera video captures officers, witnesses and first responders reacting in the moments afterward.
“I don’t know where the [expletive] he came out of,” someone can be heard saying.
“Is he alive?” an officer asks.
“I don’t know. I don’t know,” Isabel responds.
As first responders rushed toward Scott, Isabel asks witnesses whether they saw what happened.
“Did you see everything that happened though, him coming out?” Isabel asks one witness.
“Yeah,” the witness responds.
“You guys saw him come out?” Isabel asks.
“Yeah,” the witness says.
“So just stay here, obviously we are just going to need witnesses. I was the one driving,” Isabel says.
Scott later died from his injuries.
According to an arrest affidavit, investigators determined Isabel was traveling at speeds between 71 and 92 mph at various points before the crash on a roadway with a 35 mph speed limit. Witnesses told investigators the police SUV did not have its emergency lights or siren activated.
Investigators said Isabel was heading toward the area of a vehicle police were trying to locate after a tracker on that vehicle became active. A Coral Springs detective relayed the information to Isabel, who then drove toward the area at a “high rate of speed,” and the collision could not be avoided.
Scott was wearing a helmet equipped with a blinking red light at the time of the crash, according to investigators.
The Coral Springs Police Department told NBC6 they’re aware of the charge and the officer is currently on restrictive assignment.
