Success runs in the Godfrey family. After Brianna Godfrey made her mark on the softball field, her younger brother, Derek, is carving out his own path, committing to play college baseball at Garrett College.
“It’s a blessing to get to play at the next level,” Godfrey said. “All the hard work and late nights throughout these years are starting to pay off, and I’m truly grateful for everyone who helped me get to this point.”
Godfrey began playing baseball at age 5, competing for Margate Legacy, Barwis, and the X Team during his travel baseball career.
After playing middle school baseball at Coral Springs Charter, he transferred to West Boca Raton Community High School during his sophomore year and joined head coach Charlie Fine’s program.
Over his three varsity seasons, Godfrey developed into a reliable two-way player. During his senior season, he posted a sparkling 0.89 ERA, allowing just one earned run in 8.1 innings on the mound. At the plate, he batted .251 with one home run and 17 RBIs, finishing his high school career with 26 RBIs.
Godfrey helped lead the Bulls to a district championship victory over Coral Springs High School before the team defeated Braddock in the opening round of the regional playoffs. West Boca’s postseason run ended in the regional semifinals in game three against eventual state champion St. Thomas Aquinas.
Godfrey hopes to continue to get stronger and faster before he goes on to play for a college team that went 33-18 a season ago.
