El Cubano Sandwich Shop opened its second location this month in Coral Springs, off of Atlantic Boulevard and Lakeview Drive.
The original site, at 3439 NW 99th Way, opened in 2018.
The inspiration for El Cubano Sandwich Shop was memories from owner Erick Dominguez’s childhood. His mom worked in Cuban restaurants in Miami, where he often went after school and did homework, ate, and spent time. He wanted to give residents options for authentic Cuban sandwiches, platters, and coffee.
“The goal was to bring a little flavor of Miami here to Coral Springs,” he said.
But customers come from beyond Coral Springs. Dominguez said they come from as far as Commercial Blvd. — even farther. With the new location next to the Sawgrass Expressway, he hopes to attract customers from even further away.
He hopes they come to enjoy the restaurant’s signature sandwiches, such as the pan con bistec, a steak sandwich with mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onions. They also serve Cuban sandwiches with ham, pork, swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles.
But the sandwich that he recommends most is the frita burger, a beef-chorizo patty with mayo and onions.
El Cubano Sandwich Shop also serves steak, chicken, lechon (pork), and vaca frita (fried beef) platters, and breakfast is available all day. Other menu items include various milkshakes, pastelitos, and Cuban coffee. According to Dominguez, the dishes include his mom’s original recipes.
For Dominguez, the new location provides authentic Cuban food that customers can trust. More importantly, are his customers and his staff, whom he considers family. During the pandemic, he faced challenges related to health and safety, and he had to adapt quickly.
“My priority was to maintain my staff and to keep them safe to be able to come to work,” he said. “We wanted to make sure everybody’s needs were met, and everybody was safe.”
Despite the obstacles, he said that he was able to keep his staff and his customers. His customers, he said, gave him the motivation to keep the restaurant going and ultimately open a new location.
“Customers’ excitement kept me open,” he said. “We’re here, and we’re going to provide the best tasting, delicious Cuban food to our customers.”
The new location at 12440 W Atlantic Blvd. will have its official grand opening on Sept. 4.
