The Coral Springs Charter softball team won the Regional Championship Monday morning for the seventh time in school history.
The Panthers defeated Somerset Academy 2-1 after Brianna Godfrey recorded a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. She also picked up the win on the mound, pitching a complete game and striking out 15 for her 19th win of the season.
“Grateful to escape that one,” said Head Coach Mark Montimurro. “Very proud of both seniors coming thru in the clutch.”
Somerset Academy took a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but the Panthers responded to tie the game in the sixth. Stephanie Basso led off the inning with a single before Taylor Golden recorded an RBI single. In the seventh, Julia Estroff reached on an error. After Grace Derstine bunted her to second, Godfrey came through with the game-winning hit.
“That hit meant everything to me,” said Godfrey. “I knew that was going to be my last at-bat on my home field, and we had a runner in scoring position, so I knew I just had to put the ball in play to score her.”
CSC picked up their 23rd win of the season and have won 11 straight. Next, they will compete in the State Semifinals in Orlando on Wednesday, May 25. CSC will be the one seed and play Hernando High School, which comes in at 24-4.
The Leopards have won 15 straight games, including the District and Regional Championship. This will be the first meeting of the season between these two teams.
