On Friday, Governor Ron DeSantis signed an Executive Order to expand vaccine eligibility for all individuals 50 years of age and older beginning Monday, March 22.
Along with Florida Division of Emergency Management Director Jared Moskowitz, DeSantis held a discussion highlighting Florida’s COVID-19 vaccine distribution efforts.
“We’ll see how it goes next week…but I think we’ll be definitely opening it up to everybody certainly before May 1,” said DeSantis.
He said Florida was the first state in the country to make seniors a priority, and today over 3 million seniors have been vaccinated — or close to 70 of the senior population. Some counties show 81 percent of the senior population. Broward County stands at 70 percent.
Moskowitz said to-date, the state has administered 111,000 doses in long-term care facilities.
DeSantis said appointments are easier now than the first wave started at the end of December. That is why he feels confident going to a 50-plus now.
