Young entrepreneurs from J.P. Taravella set a new precedent for excellence at the International Conference in Orlando when the DECA ‘State Team’ picked up several awards on Saturday.
Led by finance teacher Laurie Acosta, a group presenting a community awareness project titled “Health is Wealth” was awarded second place in the annual competition.
“We are so proud of the students and their results in this state competition,” said Acosta, who added Devesh Hargobin was officially named Team 65 DECA State Vice President — the first state officer from JPT.
Hargobin, Aya Alam, and Sean Munsie were second-place winners. In April, they will travel to Atlanta to compete in the International DECA Career Development Conference against high school and college students worldwide.
Also, placing in the Orlando state-level competition were students Kimberly McMenamy, Sophia Gomez, and Jason Mulder. The trio won eighth place for their community giving Project, “Do Your Part, Give from the Heart,” a blood drive campaign.
In the Orlando competition’s food and integrated marketing categories, two more J.P. Taravella students from Acosta’s States Team, Cedar Bachmann and Yasmin Joubert were named eighth place winners.
DECA is an international association that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools. It comprises 94 chapters within the state of Florida, J.P. Taravella High School representing one of these.
Winners from the 2022 State Competition are expected to compete against more than 18,000 enterprising youths.
