The cast of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. {J.P. Taravella Drama}
The award-winning drama department at J.P. Taravella High School will present a special encore performance of the musical comedy A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum on Wednesday, March 12, at 7 p.m.
The encore celebrates a major achievement for the program: the production has been selected to perform at the Florida Thespian State Festival in 2026. Only 10 productions from across the state were chosen, marking the first time in 11 years — and just the fifth time in school history — that a Taravella show has earned the honor. All five selections have occurred under the direction of Lori Sessions.
“What an amazing opportunity to take this show to a new audience,” said Samuel Caycedo, who portrays Hero in the production.
Tickets for the March 12 encore performance are $25 and available through GoFan. A limited number of $10 Student Rush tickets will be offered one hour prior to curtain, on a first-come, first-served basis.
Performing at the state festival comes with high costs. School officials estimate it will cost approximately $16,000 to remount and transport the production to Tampa, with total festival participation expenses nearing $29,000. Students have been fundraising to help offset the costs, and proceeds from the encore performance will directly support the effort.
“These students worked hard on this production, and it paid off,” Sessions said. “I’m thrilled for them to experience this honor.”
Participation in the Florida Thespian State Festival provides students with the opportunity to perform in a professional venue, collaborate with experienced theater technicians, and represent their school and community on a statewide stage.
Community members are encouraged to attend the encore performance and support the students as they prepare for the festival.
The performance will take place at J.P. Taravella High School, 10600 Riverside Drive. Tickets start at $11 and are available here.
