A Coral Glades graduate claims gold and breaks world record at IPF World Championships.
Coral Springs native Joseph Borenstein, a 2021 graduate, broke the world record for the powerlifting weight-to-lift ratio and earned the gold medal in the 83kg weight class at the 2025 IPF World Open Classic Powerlifting Championships in Chemnitz, Germany, held June 8–15.
Borenstein posted a total lift of 890kg – 302.5kg squat, 215kg bench press, and 372.5kg deadlift – achieving a perfect 9-for-9 meet and securing the overall Open (all ages) win.
The international event drew 387 athletes from 60 countries across various divisions.
Borenstein, who grew up on Riverside Drive and later moved to the Lakeview neighborhood, attended Sawgrass Middle School before graduating from Coral Glades High School. He earned his degree in Kinesiology from the University of Central Florida in 2024.
“I originally got into lifting in high school to get stronger for baseball, but ended up falling in love with the process of getting stronger,” he said. “I decided to try out a local competition, and after breaking records in my first meet, I realized I had a knack for it.” From there, he got addicted to the process of improvement and chasing bigger numbers in his lifts and competitions, Borenstein added.
He said winning and breaking the world record felt “surreal.”
“Ever since I discovered there was even such a thing as ‘World Championships,’ it’s been my dream to participate,” Borenstein said, adding that representing Team USA on IPF stage and coming out with the win, while going 9/9 and breaking the world record, was everything he had worked for.
“I’ll never forget that feeling,” he said.
Borenstein added that the recent win is just the beginning, and he plans to continue pushing for world records and representing the United States on the international stage.
“Powerlifting isn’t just my passion, it is also my profession,” he said. Borenstein runs Pound 4 Pound, an online coaching business that focuses on helping other lifters reach their full potential.
