A man is facing a felony robbery charge after allegedly stealing a man’s cellphone, assaulting him during multiple street struggles, and reneging on an agreement to return the phone in exchange for beer.
According to an arrest affidavit filed by the Coral Springs Police Department, Jabari Matthew Bailey, 34, of Coral Springs, was arrested on June 7 after officers responded to reports of a robbery at the Mobil gas station located at 2251 North University Drive.
Records show the victim told CSPD he was on the phone when Bailey allegedly snatched the phone from him and ran northbound toward a nearby CVS Pharmacy. The victim chased after Bailey, leading to two separate physical altercations as the victim attempted to retrieve his phone.
During the first struggle, which took place on University Drive within the median near the CVS, Bailey allegedly grabbed the victim by the front of his shirt and punched him once in the left eye. The victim continued to pursue Bailey, leading to a second confrontation behind the CVS, where Bailey again grabbed the victim by the shirt.
At that point, the victim reportedly attempted to resolve the situation by offering to purchase Bailey beer in exchange for the return of the phone. Bailey agreed, and the two walked back to the gas station together. However, when they arrived, Bailey went back on the deal, pushed the victim again, and tried to flee.
Records show the victim then knocked on the gas station door to alert an employee and request police assistance. Upon officers’ arrival, the victim identified Bailey, telling officers, “that’s him, that’s him.”
Witnesses corroborated the victim’s account, telling police they observed the two men shoving each other outside the store and saw Bailey holding the phone.
Bailey was taken into custody, medically cleared at Broward Health Coral Springs, and eventually transported to Broward County Main Jail.
