A Coral Springs teacher was selected into a prestigious program which will take her to the South Pacific with the goal of bringing resources back into the classroom to help students better understand the service, experience and sacrifice of American veterans who served and died during World War II.
Ellen Davis, history teacher at Ramblewood Middle School was one of 18 educators in the nation, and the only educator from the state of Florida, selected to participate in Understanding Sacrifice program. The program is a partnership between National History Day, the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, the American Battle Monuments Commission and the National Cemetery Administration.
In the program which Davis will select an American hero who is buried or memorialized in an American Battle Monuments Commission or National Cemetery Administration cemetery and will conduct in-depth research on the life of this fallen hero as part of this program, which is focused on World War II in the Pacific. She will then walk in the footsteps of history as she travels to San Francisco, Honolulu and Manila in July 2017 to gain a better understanding of the American sacrifice in World War II. During the program, Davis will present a eulogy at the grave or memorial of her selected fallen hero.
“I commend Ms. Davis for being selected for this honor,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “The Understanding Sacrifice program provides educators with unique insight into the lives of American fallen soldiers. Through the program, Ms. Davis can bring this powerful experience back to her students and provide them with a greater understanding of our nation’s history and the freedoms our servicemen and women have fought to protect.”
Davis will also create lesson plans from her hands-on experience to share with her students at Ramblewood Middle that will become part of a database of lessons for use with the Understanding Sacrifice program.
“National History Day strives to connect students to the past and one of the best points of contact with any student, is their teacher” said National History Day Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “This program is highly competitive and Ms. Davis should be proud to be accepted. I know she will use this once in a lifetime journey to create a superb lesson plan.”
