No Kings Day came to Coral Springs on June 14.
People from the area gathered around the intersection of University Drive and Sample Road to voice their criticism of President Donald Trump, his leadership, and his policies. Many carried signs and yelled chants demanding change.
“I am fighting for democracy, and I am against the evil and tyrannical leadership of Trump,” said Connie Darga.
Many of the demonstrators said they were opposed to the increased bigotry and hatred in the United States.
“We are losing our democracy, and I am protesting the bigotry of the Trump administration,” said Paula Meidorf.
Many participants are frustrated with the nation’s path. “I am young, and I don’t like what Trump is doing,” said Joel Lima.
“This is what democracy is all about,” said Joan Sonabend, a demonstrator.
Leaders of the local Democratic Party were pleased to see a large turnout at the protest against Trump’s actions. “It is amazing to see so many people demonstrating, and it shows that people are not happy with the current situation and want change,” said Francis Farnum, a member of the Coral Springs/Parkland Democratic Club.
Curt Tiefenbrun, president of the Coral Springs/Parkland Democratic Club, participated and was pleased that regular people were demonstrating. “It is important that people know that we can come together to demonstrate. Your friends and neighbors can work together against Trump,” he said.
There were large groups of demonstrators at each corner of the intersection of University Drive and Sample Road, with many also lining the roads. For a time, a young woman used a bullhorn to shout, “This is what democracy looks like,” and others joined in. Some drivers honked their horns in support.
The Coral Springs Police Department maintained a presence, but there were no altercations between law enforcement and demonstrators.
The demonstrators were people from all backgrounds and walks of life. Older adults, some of whom were in wheelchairs, stood alongside young individuals. There were no counter-demonstrators offering support for Trump, but some participants said a few drivers shouted in favor of the president.
