The Coral Springs Charter softball team is more than halfway through their regular season and is 7-3 this year heading into spring break.
The Panthers’ only losses this year came in extra innings against Park Vista, Wellington, and nationally ranked Doral Academy. CSC has outscored its opponents 67-3 in its seven wins after losing just once last season.
Seven-time State Champion Mark Montimurro says his team is in a better place than last year despite playing without reigning Pitcher of the Year Sophia Bertorelli and Florida Gulf Coast commit Kate Maston.
“Our schedule has been grueling, but hopefully, that will prepare us a bit better for a playoff run,” Montimurro said. “Courtney Wahlbrink has been phenomenal, and the position players have stepped up in Kate’s absence. We are looking forward to playing our best softball in late April into May.”
Gio Gurgel, who missed last year with an injury, leads the team with a .375 batting average and has hit three home runs. Stephanie Basso leads the team with four, while Heather Robertson and Jessica Sacca have also homered. Alivia Taibl is also hitting .300 for the Panthers.
Wahlbrink has pitched in every game and has struck out 92 hitters in 62.1 innings with an ERA of .337. Montimurro is hopeful that he will be able to get both his superstars back later this season in Bertorelli and Maston. The Panthers will be off until April 3 against Cooper City High School at 6:30 p.m.
