Mark Montimurro of Coral Springs Charter softball has had some incredible pitchers throughout the years, but Sophia Bertorelli is proving to be one of the best.
Bertorelli is 7-0 on the mound this year and did not allow an earned run through her first 33 innings.
“I’ve been throwing fairly good, but I’m constantly striving to become better,” said Bertorelli. “I appreciate having a strong support system and feel certain they have my back.”
Bertorelli has an era of .38 and has stuck out 83 of the 123 batters she has faced. The sophomore also pitched a no-hitter against Cooper City High School and was part of a combined no-hitter with eighth grader Courtney Wahlbrink against Oxbridge Academy. Bertorelli also had a no-hitter in their 11-0 win against Somerset Academy.
“Team has come together, and we’ve played pretty solid in all phases,” said Montimurro. “Obviously, our pitching has been phenomenal, but it’s really early. It’s all about peaking in late April.”
The Panthers have also shined offensively this year. Heather Robertson had the biggest hit this year with a two-run home run in extra innings over Wellington. She homered earlier this year and is tied with Kate Maston for the team lead with two home runs. Stephanie Basso also had one, while Maston also leads the team in RBIs with nine, ahead of Bella Bertorelli, who has eight.
Michel and Basso have each driven in six runs, while Alivia Taibl leads the team with a .562 batting average. Julia Estroff, Jessica Sacca, and Addison Michel are hitting nearly. 400 this year.
“I think the reason we are having such a good offensive start to this season is that we all put in the work at practice and on our own,” said Taibl. “We push each other to be better, which has led to our success so far this season.”
Next, CSC, who is now ranked first in the State and ninth in the nation, will play Cypress Bay High School on Wednesday, March 15, before playing in the Orange Bowl Showcase this weekend.
