On March 4, Sawgrass Springs Middle School held its first-ever Incubate Debate Tournament, led by debate coach Dr. Linda Pierre.
Pierre has been planting the seeds of intellectual curiosity in the minds of her students her whole career, growing the SSMS debate team from 12 to over 100 students last year alone; she now adds an additional feather to her cap for successfully hosting this event.
Founded by James T. Fishback in 2019, Incubate Debate is a non-profit organization that aims to bring educational and engaging no-cost debate opportunities to students throughout Florida. The organization works closely with parents, teachers, and community partners to help students become strong public speakers, quick thinkers, and engaged citizens.
Coral Springs Vice-Mayor Shawn Cerra and the school’s new principal, Mrs. Melinda Frame-Wessinger, were in attendance.
Eighty competitors from middle and high schools across the region participated. Of those, 12 students qualified to compete in the State Championship in Jacksonville next month. Two of these students were from Sawgrass Springs.
