City of Coral Springs Releases 4th Anniversary Tribute of Marjory Stoneman Douglas Victims

By Bryan Boggiano

The City of Coral Springs marked the fourth anniversary of the Stoneman Douglas tragedy with a video message from Mayor Scott Brook on Monday.

The 2-minute-and-34-second video features Mayor Brook speaking about the tragedy over images of community members mourning and consoling one another, some in tears, over somber music.

It comes as a tribute to 17 students and staff members killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb. 14, 2018.

“On a day meant to celebrate love, the worst kind of hate was unleashed, and our community was forever changed,” he said.

Mayor Brook also read the names of the 17 victims of the Stoneman Douglas tragedy.

He said that in the four years since the shooting, the community turned their grief into action, consoling one another, marching, and fighting for justice and change.

Despite the community’s resilience and action in the face of adversity, Mayor Brook acknowledges that people in the community have lasting effects from the tragedy, including depression, anxiety, and grief.

He encourages residents who are experiencing feelings of depression, hopelessness, or self-harm to call 211, reach out to Eagles Haven, and text “Home” to 741741 for help.

“After you take that first step, believe me, it gets a little bit easier,” he said.

But Mayor Brook did offer some advice for everybody in the community to honor the legacy of the victims.

He encouraged residents to spend time with loved ones, do something nice for others, and find a way to spread positivity.

“When we spread love and not hate, that’s when we’re at our best as a society and a community, and we need each other,” Mayor Brook said. “And in Coral Springs, we will never forget.”
