Formed in 1980 in Sydney, Australia, The Church rose to prominence on its unique mix of neo-psychedelia and alternative rock. Over the years, their sound has been defined by the interplay of guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes and the abstract lyrics of bassist and singer Steve Kilbey.
They first gained radio recognition with the debut album, Of Skins and Heart (1981), which featured the hit single “The Unguarded Moment.” This early success, however, was somewhat hindered due to overseas distribution issues with their initial record label, EMI’s Parlophone.
The Church found a wider international audience in 1988 after signing with Arista, with their album Starfish and the hit single “Under The Milky Way.” This track gained further popularity when it was featured on the cult movie “Donnie Darko” soundtrack. Subsequent commercial success proved elusive, leading to several line-up changes.
Despite not achieving commercial success, the Church’s subsequent albums were highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike. Albums like Priest = Aura (1992) and Sometime Anywhere (1994) showed the band’s willingness to experiment and redefine sound.
The late 90s marked a resurgence for the band, with Peter Koppes rejoining and drummer Tim Powles coming on board. This resulted in a renewed creative surge, with albums like “Hologram Of Baal” (1998) and “Magician Among The Spirits” (1996) demonstrating the band’s unwavering ability to deliver innovative music.
The Church maintained its momentum into the new millennium with highly acclaimed albums like “After Everything Now This” (2002) and “Forget Yourself” (2003), the latter seeing band members swap instruments during the recording process. Their importance in the Australian music scene was recognized with an ARIA award in 2010, marking their 30th anniversary.
Their most recent albums, “Further Deeper” (2014) and “man woman life death infinity” (2017), received rave reviews, continuing their legacy of creating inspiring and boundary-pushing music.
The upcoming concert promises to be a riveting journey through The Church’s vast and innovative catalog. Located at 3045 N Federal Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, Culture Room is known for hosting a range of high-profile events. Tickets are available now at Ticketmaster.
