Coral Springs Police Sgt. Ebony Winn has died after a courageous six-year battle with cancer, police announced Saturday.
Winn joined the force in 2008 and spent her career “serving this community with dedication and integrity, always putting others first,” CSPD said in a Facebook post.
“Winn was more than a dedicated member of our department. She was a daughter, sister, friend, and a source of strength to everyone who knew her,” police said. “As we mourn her loss, we also take a moment to honor the life she lived and the legacy she leaves behind.”
The department said Winn was an exemplary law enforcement professional, her colleagues could turn to for guidance and support, and who had a lasting impact on the force.
“Her presence made a difference, and her absence will be felt across our department,” police said.
Winn’s union, the Coral Springs Fraternal Order of Police, announced a GoFundMe campaign Saturday to help her family cover funeral expenses and memorial arrangements, and help with financial support.
In a Facebook post, the union called Winn a “true warrior in every sense of the word.”
“After courageously battling cancer for the past six years, Ebony gained her wings today,” the post says. “Ebony served her community with unwavering dedication … committing her life to protecting and uplifting others. She embodied the very best of law enforcement—compassionate, steady, selfless, and fiercely protective of those she swore to serve. Her fellow officers knew her as a leader who led with integrity, a mentor who inspired everyone around her, and a friend who could brighten even the hardest days.”
Union officials said Winn fought her cancer with determination and courage, while continuing to pour love into her family and strength into those who looked up to her.
“Her resilience was extraordinary, and her spirit remained unbroken until the very end,” the union said.
CSPD said information about funeral services and arrangements will be shared as it becomes available.
