When Alexander Zenoz takes center stage at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts next month in Evil Dead: The Musical, expect him to make quite a splash, in blood that is.
Zenoz, 31, a Miami native, will be playing the leading role of Ash in this rock musical, camp comedy. Describing the play as a weird, gory satire spoofing horror films of the 1980s. “This takes the camp to 100 percent,” he said.
As for that splash of fake blood which will be enough to splatter – in a silly, fun way – those seated in the first two rows, the actor said, “I’m singing while I’m cutting my hand off with a chainsaw.”
Evil Dead: The Musical is based on the Evil Dead movie franchise. The story revolves around five college students spending the weekend in an abandoned cabin in the woods, accidentally unleashing an evil terror that turns them into demons. Expect to see both characters and demons alike singing and dancing to the musical score. And leave it up to Ash, who, along with his trusty chainsaw, saves the day.
Zenoz is a first-generation Cuban-American who now resides in Miami Shores. He is an all-around entertainer who not only acts, but also sings and writes music. His favorite genre? “I love making music,” he said. “I have my own band, Alexander and the Birds of Paradise.” Their music repertoire ranges from classic rock to pop rock. Zenoz composes his own original music on piano. He plays the guitar as well.
He’s been involved in music and acting for many years, and even had the unique experience of being trapped at sea during the Covid pandemic for 53 days while entertaining aboard a cruise ship on a Mideast tour, he said. “They wouldn’t let us off the ship, and no place would let us dock,” he said.
The actor is also known for his role as Giuseppe in the Hulu streaming horror-musical movie, Big Easy Queens.
The show is being produced by Invision Theatre Company Inc., a black and veteran-owned organization dedicated to generating original theatrical productions and published works that build community, showcase diversity, and enlighten society through culture. Artistic Director Andre Russell and co-founder Andrew Ramsarran, a U.S. Air Force veteran, founded Invision.
Zenoz, who was reached for this interview while spending his summer in Provincetown, Mass., is looking forward to appearing in this South Florida stage production.
The show opens on September 12 and runs through September 20, with tickets starting at $41.58. The Coral Springs Center for the Arts is located at 2855 Coral Springs Drive. The box office phone number is 954-344-5990. Tickets are available here.
