The City of Coral Springs and Charter School USA who are in discussions to relocate the charter school to the parking lot of the Center for the Arts and Mullins Park now have a likely vote forward in their favor.
Mayor Skip Campbell, once resistant to the proposal, now seems in favor of it. “I think it will improve the area,” said Campbell, who told Coral Springs Talk that he’s still waiting for the traffic study to come back before he fully makes up his mind.
“Once I saw the plans and specs, I realized that it will be beneficial to the citizens of Coral Springs.”
Campbell said that the school would form a public and private partnership where they would pay $25 million to build the facility, lease the land, and in around 49 years, the building will come back to the city.
“They are building a six story parking garage as well as a gymnasium – and the public will be able to use it,” he said.
The Coral Springs Charter School opened for the 1999-2000 school year after the city commission paid $7 million for the old Coral Springs Mall. Former Commissioner Alan Polin, who pioneered the ‘Town Center’ concept, said he felt like a proud new father when it was built. “This project marks the beginning of a new chapter, not only in education, but in the overall redevelopment of Sample and University,” he said in 1999.
Already, several sources have told Coral Springs Talk that a former city commissioner’s husband is asking that the new charter school campus is named after his wife who served when the school was built.
Residents can get involved at the next Community Meeting, which was initially scheduled for April 9, was postponed. The rescheduled meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 3 at 7 p.m where residents can ask questions about the proposed move.
“We want to be able to present the community complete results of the Traffic Study at the next community meeting,” City Manager Erdal Donmez said.
The meeting will be held at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts • A/B Meeting Room 2855 Coral Springs Drive.

How ridiculous to change the name…it already has a name. How self serving to even ask? Am sure Roy would want to throw his name in there. I heard this was already a done deal, that parents were told this is a done deal, so why even bother with the pretense that it isn’t?
