It was standing room only during the Mayors’ Chess Challenge when it made its first-ever stop to the City of Parkland on Saturday.
The free event which stops in a different city every few weeks during the school year is open to everyone regardless of age, playing level or even beginner status.
“It was such a pleasure to host the Mayors’ Chess Challenge for the first time in Parkland,” said Mayor Christine Hunschofsky. “This wonderful community event brought together people of all ages and everyone had so much fun playing chess whether they were beginners or skilled chess players.”
The Mayors’ Chess Challenge was spearheaded by Sunrise Mayor Michael Ryan in cooperation with Mayors from throughout Broward County, the Challenge draws attention to the benefits of chess in both the academic environment and in the community.
Besides a room full of players, Hunschofsky was on hand playing chess along with Vice Mayor Stacy Kagan, and Commissioners Ken Cutler, Bob Mayersohn and Grace Solomon. Also, at the event was Broward County Commissioner Michael Udine and School Board Member Robin Bartleman.
After the Parkland event, it continues on to Wilton Manors, Hallandale Beach, Lauderhill, Cooper City, Oakland Park, Lauderdale Lakes and Fort Lauderdale before heading to Pembroke Pines in May.
