On Thursday, volunteers and gun violence survivors will participate in a press conference with House Representatives Ted Deutch and Donna Shalala to demand senate action requiring background checks on all gun sales, along with a strong federal red flag law.
The press conference, presented by gun violence prevention activists and gun violence survivors with the Florida chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety will be held at Coral Springs City Hall.
This event follows more than 100 recess rallies, which took place in all 50 states earlier in August in response to the deadly mass shootings in El Paso and Dayton, as well as daily gun violence that kills 100 Americans every day — with hundreds more being wounded.
Heather Chapman, a volunteer with the Florida chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America in Parkland, and Anthony “Tony” Montalto, President of Stand with Parkland will be in attendance. Montalto’s daughter, Gina Rose, was killed in the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting on February 14, 2018.
Moms Demand Action has established a chapter in every state of the country and, along with Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Students Demand Action and the Everytown Survivor Network, it is part of Everytown for Gun Safety, the largest gun violence prevention organization in the country with nearly 6 million supporters and more than 350,000 donors.
Last February, Rep. Deutch and Rep. Shalala voted to pass multiple gun safety measures out of the House of Representatives, including H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Check Act of 2019, which would require background checks on all gun sales. A red flag law is a gun control law which permits the police or family members to petition a state court to order the temporary removal of firearms from a person who may present a danger to others or themselves.
