After Governor DeSantis appointed Gregory Tony as sheriff in January, he’s been reforming the Broward Sheriff’s Office by focusing on training as well as modifying the active shooter policy.
On November 4, less than two weeks after the Florida Senate voted not to reinstate suspended Sheriff Scott Israel, he filed to run for office as a Democrat. Once a registered Republican, Tony addressed the party switch at a recent news conference.
“I made my changes for the sake of making sure I represent this community in doing the right thing for every single person that lives in Broward County.”
Tony, who lives in Coral Springs with his wife, Holly, enters a crowded field with six other Democrats: Raymond Hicks, Scott Israel, Willie Jones, Al Pollock, Andrew Smalling, and Santiago Vazquesz, Jr.
H. Wayne Clark has filed as a Republican.
A campaign kick-off fundraiser will take place at Funky Buddha, where his friends and supporters are invited to attend. Contributions are limited to $1,000 per person or corporation. So far, a political committee called Broward First has already raised $229,000 for his campaign.
