Coral Springs Police will launch a crackdown on distracted driving next week, an enforcement operation the department will continue through September 2022, officials said Thursday.
Distracted driving is one of the fastest-growing safety issues on the city’s roads, police said in a prepared statement announcing the crackdown.
Police operations will be conducted periodically in Coral Springs between Nov. 26 and Sept. 30, 2022, police said.
“Distracted drivers aren’t just a threat to themselves; they’re a danger to everyone else on the road,” police officials said in the statement. “For the past decade, distracted driving has taken U.S. roadways by storm, endangering not only the distracted drivers, but their passengers, pedestrians, and others on the road—including bicyclists.”
The object of the operation is to “ensure the safety of our citizens and to promote safe driving habits while commuting on our city streets,” the statement reads.
During the crackdown, officers from the Coral Springs Police Department Traffic Unit will be assigned to “areas of concern” with high frequencies of vehicle crashes, police said.
The uniformed officers will be issuing citations to drivers who violate state statutes and educating them on the dangers of distracted driving. The goal of their enforcement, police said, is to reduce crashes and prevent injuries from distracted driving.
The enforcement and educational operations will be conducted in conjunction with the Florida Department of Transportation’s “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” campaign, police said. Additional information can be found at www.alerttodayflorida.com.
