Two people were killed when a plane flying a relief mission to hurricane-ravaged Jamaica crashed in Coral Springs Monday morning, authorities said.
The plane crash happened in the Windsor Bay subdivision of Coral Creek near State Road 7 and Creekside Drive, according to the Coral Springs Police Department.
Authorities were on scene investigating the crash and conducting recovery efforts across both land and water in the suburban community. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
The Beechcraft King Air plane, a small turboprop plane bound for Jamaica on a mission to help with the Hurricane Melissa relief effort, took off from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport around 10:14 a.m. and crashed into a pond in the Coral Springs community at 10:19 a.m., authorities told The Associated Press.
Police said no residents on the ground were hurt.
Authorities said they were searching for the bodies of two people aboard the plane. As of Monday afternoon, their identities had not been made public, pending family notification, police said.
According to Federal Aviation Administration records, the registered owner of the plane is International Air Services, a company specializing in providing trust agreements to non-U.S. citizens that enable them to register their aircrafts with the FAA, the AP reported.
Hurricane Melissa, a Category 5 storm, was one of the two strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history when it struck Jamaica on Oct. 28. The hurricane also devastated parts of Haiti, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic.
Additional information about Monday’s plane crash was not immediately made public by police.
