Authorities have identified the two people killed in Monday morning’s plane crash in Coral Springs as 53-year-old Alexander Wurm and his 22-year-old daughter, Serena Wurm.
The aircraft, a twin-engine Beechcraft King Air plane, went down just after 10:15 a.m. in the 5000 block of Northwest 57th Way, just west of State Road 7, authorities said.
The plane struck several trees and a backyard fence before plunging into a waterway behind a home in Windsor Bay, a quiet Coral Springs neighborhood. No one on the ground was injured.
Evangelist Alexander Wurm was the founder and CEO of Ignite the Fire Ministry, a Christian nonprofit devoted to youth outreach and evangelism across the Caribbean. He and his daughter were flying from Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport to Jamaica, carrying relief supplies for communities hit by Hurricane Melissa. Their organization said the pair had mad similar trips to deliver food, clothing, and medicine in the past.
A statement from Ignite the Fire Ministry said of the father and daughter humanitarians: “Together, their final journey embodied selflessness and courage. Rest in peace, Alexander and Serena—your light endures in all whose lives you changed.”
Surveillance video captured the aircraft crashing down into the lake. Pieces of wreckage were scattered across the community.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash. They are examining the aircraft’s maintenance history, the pilot’s flight record, and weather conditions at the time of departure. A preliminary report is expected in the coming weeks.
Alexander Wurm is survived by his wife, Candace, and two other children. Serena, who had recently completed college, was described by her family as deeply committed to her father’s mission work and to helping children in need.
