Playing a varsity sport in high school while preparing for college is tough, but Coral Springs resident McKenzie Jewell manages to go beyond that.
Not only is she a star basketball player, but Jewell is also one of the top softball pitchers in Broward County for Pompano Beach High School.
Jewell, who recently moved to Coral Springs, lives in Butler Farms. After school, Jewell attends basketball practice and then lifts at Wasserman Strength before softball practice at Betty Stradling Park.

“I love playing both sports and using different athletic skill sets,” said Jewell. “I manage my time between both because I’ve played them for so long that it just comes naturally to me. If you really love a sport, you will always find a way.”

Along with playing on two varsity teams, Jewell also plays for the Virginia Legends 18u Premier softball team and is #58 in the 2023 Extra Elite 100. She also is a two-sport captain and a member of the honor society with a 4.7 GPA.
While she loves both sports, she hopes to get the opportunity to play softball In college. Jewell also plans on majoring in health administration and nursing. So far, she has made a couple of unofficial college visits the past few months and hopes to find the right spot for a school where she can do both.
Jewell began playing softball at eight for Coconut Creek. Through her first two years on varsity, she has won six games and has pitched to an ERA of 2.37. She also is hitting .500 with eight home runs and 39 RBI’s while her team has combined to go 24-9 and hit all eight of her homers in 2021 to lead Broward County.

As the tee and second-leading scorer on the basketball court, she recorded five three-pointers in one game. The Golden Tornadoes are 6-5 this year and have won their last five games after starting the season 1-5.
This spring, Jewell will have five more regular-season basketball games for Pompano Beach before the postseason. Soon after, she will start the softball season on February 22, when she faces off against her best friend Brianna Godfrey with the Coral Springs Charter softball team.
