High school baseball is officially underway in Coral Springs, with four teams taking the field — including the first win for new Coral Glades Head Coach Bryan Gonzales.
The Jaguars defeated Nova High School 10–3 behind a strong outing from Jason Lincoln. He pitched four innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out three. Delfin Gonzalez threw the final three innings, surrendering two runs, neither of which was earned.
Lincoln also led the way offensively with three RBIs. Josh Ruiz and Enzo Hernandez each drove in two runs, while Charlie Beaty added one in the victory. Coral Glades is coming off a 14–6 season and will face Calvary Christian Academy on Thursday, February 12, at 5:30 p.m. The Eagles enter the matchup 2–0 after reaching Regionals last season.
Coral Springs High School opened its season with a 10-inning marathon but fell just short in a 4–3 loss. The Colts jumped out to a 2–0 lead after two innings but surrendered the advantage in the sixth inning. After reclaiming a 3–1 lead, CSHS allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth and ultimately gave up the game-winning run in the 10th. Gabriel De La Cruz and Natran Wheeler each recorded RBIs. Andrew Painter, Jordan Guzman, Alain Ducasse, and Guzman all saw time on the mound.
J.P. Taravella also began its season Monday with a 5–3 loss to Calvary Christian Academy. The Trojans scored in the third, fifth, and seventh innings but managed just four hits in the game. Jake Miller and Bryson Plante drove in runs, while Jack Almeida, Ryan Dolan, and Aaron Ricker each pitched at least one inning. JPT reached Regionals last season before being eliminated by Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The Trojans will face Spanish River Community High School on Thursday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. The Sharks went 13–13 last year and will be playing their season opener.
Coral Springs Charter scored in the first inning but was shut out the rest of the way in a 4–1 loss to Saint Andrew’s School. Nolan Miankowski delivered an RBI triple, and four different Panthers appeared on the mound. Mateo Guzman made the start and tossed four shutout innings before the bullpen allowed one run in the fifth and sixth innings and two more in the seventh.
The Panthers won 10 games last season and will play Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory School on Thursday, February 12, at 6 p.m. The Lions opened their season with a 1–0 win over St. Brendan High School and reached the Regional Semifinals last year before falling to Westminster Christian.
